今回はカナダのポップパンクバンドSeawayにインタビューに応じてもらいました。インタビューに応じてくれたのドラムのKen。地元のポップパンクシーンのことから、リリースやツアーなど今後の予定のことまで、いろいろ答えてくれています。ビデオなどでパーティー的なノリの強いバンドだろうなと思っていた反面、インタビューにはかなりきっちりと答えてくれました。しかし、ところどころにはサラっとジョークも。そんなところも含めてお楽しみください。

Seawayはいつ結成されましたか？またどのように集まったメンバーかも教えてください。
- 5人は長い間ずっと親友同士で、一緒に音楽を演奏しているよ。何人かとは小さいときからの友達だし、Patrickとは高校生のときに出会っていっしょにつるむようになった感じだね。2011年にPatrickが夏の間だけAndrewの家に同居したことがあって、そのあとにSeawayを結成したんだ。PatrickとAndrewがバンドの「基礎」にあたるものを作って、それを聞いたみんなは、今までやってきたどのバンドより面白いものになりそうだと思って、ソッコーでバンドを結成したんだよ。
いつもブログを読んでいただいてる日本のみんなからも多くの質問が寄せられました。まず、カナダのポップパンクシーンについて教えてください。仲のいいバンドやよく一緒にライブをやるバンドにはどのようなバンドがいますか？おすすめのバンドがいればぜひ教えてください。
- カナダのポップパンクシーン(オンタリオのことだけしか分からないけど)は、完全復活に向けた道のりの途中だね。僕たちのローカルシーンは、かつてpop punkやemo、indie rockのショウでとても盛り上がっていたんだ。毎週末、キッズたちは、The Fullblast, Sydney, Silverstein, Cain and Abelなんかのバンドのショウに出かけて、ライブハウスはどこもパンパンに詰まっていたね。本当にシーンは大きなものだった。でも、そのあとにメタルやハードコアがやってきて、そういったシーンをまるごと飲み込んだ。それはちょうど僕たちが一緒にバンドをやっていたときだったから(2006年くらいかな)、僕たちも自然とそういったバンド[メタルやハードコア]をやってたね。でも、その活動も１、２年ぐらいしか続かなかったけど。そのころには、オンタリオの音楽シーンにポップパンクがまた大きなインパクトを与え始めていたからね。
周りには、本当にたくさんのいいバンドがいるよ。Like Pacific, Safe to Say, July, Facing Forward (another dope Oakville band)なんかは、一緒にライブをやっててとても楽しいね。本当にたくさんのおすすめバンドがいるよ。もし、上にあげたバンドを知らなければチェックして欲しいし、Dangercat, Withdrawal, Cursed, UTKF, Gravemakerなんかもチェックしてみて。
地元のOakvilleはアメリカにも近いように思いますが、アメリカのバンドとのつながりも多いですか？
- うん、僕たちはニューヨーク州にあるナイアガラの滝まで1時間ぐらいの距離のところに住んでいるんだ。まだ、アメリカでツアーをやったことはないけど(延期になっちゃってるんだ)、インターネットのおかげでアメリカ中にたくさんの友達がいるよ。Knuckle Puckは良いbutt buddiesだし[ジョークかと]、Bellwetherとはもうすぐ一緒にパーティをする予定で、Real Friendsとも、もうすぐいくつかのショウをすることになっているよ。僕たちはカナダでアメリカのバンドと一緒に共演するっていう機会が多くあって、本当にラッキーだよ。多くの友達が作れるからね。
日本でもポップパンク好きにはSeawayは知られていて、中でもSabrina The Teenage BitchのMVはとても人気があります。あのビデオをみて多くの質問寄せられたのですが、ボーカルのマイクの持ち方はとても特徴がありますよね。あれは、最初からですか。それとも、だれかに影響を受けたとかですか？また、Sabrina The Teenage Bitchの途中にゲストボーカルとして登場する女性はだれですか？
- Seawayは、Ryanが初めてフロントマンを務めるバンドなんだ。彼は、かつてドラマーだったからね。僕が思うに、彼は自然とああいうマイクの持ち方をしているんだと思うよ。(何しろ、彼は自然とHard Shaftを口の近くに持っていくからね [Hard Shaftについてはお察しください]) 彼は、たくさんハードコアも聞くし、そこからの影響もあるんじゃないかな。
Sabrina The Teenage Bitchでのゲストボーカルは、友達のMelany Doranだよ。彼女はすっごいシンガーなんだ。”melanyrachel”っていうYouTubeチャンネルをチェックしてみてよ。Citizenや Seahavenのカバーを歌ってるよ。
曲の歌詞は、どのようなことを歌ったものが多いですか？
- 今までの曲は何を言いたいかがはっきりした曲がほとんどだね。女の子たちのことや、パーティーのこと、あとは女の子のことだったり、僕たちを酔っぱらわせてくれるもののこと、あとは学校のことや、女の子のことかな (笑) このバンドを始めたときから、今年の終わりまで、僕たちは全員ずっと学校にいるから、いつでも学校生活のことが曲作りに影響を与えるんだ。次のフルアルバムは新しいテーマがあって、今までのようにはっきりと分かりやすい内容になってない曲もいくつかあるかもね。
2012年にはSafe To Sayとのスプリットをリリースしていますが、このあとの音源のリリースについて何か予定はありますか？教えられる範囲で教えてください。
- うん、いいよ！ “Clean Yourself Up”っていうアコースティックEPのレコーディングに入ることを発表したばかりなんだ。もうすぐオンライン上でリリースするつもりだし、Scotlandではカセットでのリリースもする予定。数は限られると思うけど、海外用にもいくつか確保できるかもね。あと、4/12からデビューフルアルバムのドラムのトラッキングに入るんだ。デビューアルバムはMutant League Recordsから今年のどこかのタイミングでリリースするよ。
このあとに大きなツアーの予定などはありますか？
- うん。過去にいくつかのツアーの計画がダメになっちゃってるんだけど、ついにこの6月に2週間半のツアーに出る予定なんだ。やっとだよ！ すっごいバンドとの激ヤバなツアーになるから、まだ発表できていないんだけどね！
日本のパンクシーンについて知っていることはありますか？好きなバンドがいたら教えてください。
- 残念ながら、日本のポップパンクシーンについて知る機会っていうのはあまりなくて、日本に行ったバンドのライブビデオやツアードキュメンタリーでみるしか手段がないんだ。いくつかおすすめのバンドを教えてよ。日本のバンドやファンについては、いい噂しか聞かないからね。
文化や食べ物など、日本にどのような印象を持っていますか？
- 僕たちが日本について知ってることは、どれも最高だね。クレイジーだと思うし、カナダより楽しいだろうなって思う。料理に関しては何でも好きだから、いつか日本に行ったときは、ドープなフードスポットへ連れていってよね。
メンバーに日系人がいると聞いたのですが、本当ですか？
– うん、本当だよ！ Asian sensationこと、Adam Shojiだよ！

When do you guys start the band? What was the relation of the members before you start the band?
- The five of us have been best friends and playing music together for a long time. Some of us have known each other since we were small kids, and others just kind of showed up in high school and started following us around (Patrick). We started Seaway in the later half of 2011 after Patrick moved in with Andrew and his family for the summer. They wrote “The Basics” and from then on we knew this band was going to be more fun than anything we’d done in the past, and haven’t really thought twice about it.
I got so many questions to you from my friends in Japan. First please let me know about pop punk scene in Canada. What bands do you often play with? I’d like to know cool bands in Canada you recommend.
– The pop punk scene in Canada (or at least Ontario) is still in the process of making a full recovery. Our local scene used to be HUGE for pop punk/emo/indie shows. Every weekend there would be a massive room full of kids to go see The Fullblast, Sydney, Silverstein, Cain and Abel and any other bands that were playing. The scene was huge. Metal and hardcore blew up right after and kind of took over the entire scene. That’s when we started playing music together (2006) so we naturally went down that path, but it wasn’t until a year or two ago that pop punk bands started making an impact on the Ontario music scene. There are tons of bands from around here we love to play with, but to name a few, Like Pacific, Safe to Say, July, Facing Forward (another dope Oakville band). There are tons to recommend, check out the bands above if you haven’t already, check out Dangercat, Withdrawal, Cursed, UTKF, and Gravemaker.
I think Oakville, your hometown is near US. There are some good friend bands in US?
- Yeah, we live about an hour from the border to Niagara Falls, NY. We haven’t done any touring down there yet (stay posted) but thanks to the Internet we have lots of friends throughout the states. Knuckle Puck are some good butt buddies of ours, Bellwether are gonna be partying with us soon and Real Friends and us are doing some shows together. We’ve been lucky to play a lot of shows with US bands in Canada, so we’ve made a lot of friends along the way!
In Japan, Seaway is well known among pop punk lovers. Especially, your music video of ” Sabrina The Teenage Bitch” is very popular. So I’d like to ask about that video.
I think (most Japanese friends also think) the way Ryan (vocal) holds microphone is unique. He holds in that way originally? Or, he received influence from somebody?
And, who is the lady singing as the guest vocal?
– This is the first band Ryan’s ever sang in (he used to be a drummer), so Seaway is his first experience as a frontman. It’s just how he feels naturally holding it I guess (since he naturally holds hard shafts close to his mouth). He listens to a lot of hardcore so maybe he gets it from there too? The guest vocalist in Sabrina is our good friend Melany Doran, who is an AMAZING singer. Check out her youtube channel “melanyrachel” for covers of cool bands like Citizen and Seahaven.
Please let me know what kind of theme you usually sing and play? (please let me know about the meaning of song).
- Most of the songs we’ve released so far are pretty clear on what they’re trying to say. We write about girls, parties, girls, stuff that pisses us off, school, girls. We’re all been away at school since the beginning of this band, and will be until the end of this year, so that has always influenced our writing. Our full length has some new themes on it, and some songs that maybe aren’t as obvious or blatant as our past material.
I know you released split with Safe To Say in 2012. Do you have a plan about upcoming release? Please let me know if you can.
- Yes! We just announced that we’re going to be releasing another acoustic EP called “Clean Yourself Up”, which will be released online very soon, and available on cassette in Scotland and possibly a few other limited foreign runs. I begin tracking drums for our debut full length on April 12th that will be coming out through Mutant League Records at some point in 2013.
And do you have a plan to do a long tour?
- Yes. After a few tours falling through for us over the past year, we’re FINALLY going to be hitting the road for two and half weeks in June. Stay posted for that to be announced because it’s going to be an awesome run with an awesome band.
Do you know something about punk rock scene in Japan? (Japanese bands, for example)
– Unfortunately everything I know about the Japanese pop punk scene comes from videos and tour documentaries of bands going over there. Can you suggest some bands? We’ve heard only good things about the bands and fans in Japan!
What impression do you have about Japan? (culture, foods, people, etc.)
- Everything we know about Japan seems awesome! It looks crazy, and a lot more fun than Canada. We love food of all kinds, so whenever we make it over to Japan, you have to take us to some dope food spots!
And I heard that some of your member is Japanese Canadian. Is that true?
- This is very true. Adam Shoji, the Asian sensation.
