久しぶりの海外バンドインタビュー。オーストリアのメロディックパンクバンド、Damn Mondaysにインタビューを行いました。ヨーロッパという土地柄には珍しく、USモダンメロディックからの強い影響が伺える、ファストかつ力強いサウンドが魅力のバンドです。今回は、バンドの女性ボーカル、Tanjaに答えてもらっています。新しいEP”Losing Years”に込めた、多くの20代が経験するだろう気持ちの葛藤や、バンド名の理由、オーストリアのメロディックパンクシーンについてなど、興味深い内容になっていると思います。(interview by 3104punx)

今回はインタビューに応じてくださってありがとうございます。まず最初に、自己紹介をお願いします。
Hi!! Tanjaです。オーストリアのザルツブルク出身のメロディックバンド、Damn Mondaysでボーカルを務めています。
どういった理由で「Damn Mondays」というバンド名になったんですか？
うん、基本的には、みんな月曜日が嫌いだと思うの。週末はいつだって短すぎる。そして月曜日がまるで平手打ちのようにやってきて、自分の生活が嫌気のするものだってことを思い出させるから。
ある日、日曜日の午後にスタジオに入って練習していて、次の日に仕事や大学に戻らないといけないことについて文句を言っていたことがあって。そのときにTom(ギター)が”クソみたいな月曜日が嫌いだ(I hate damn Mondays)”みたいなことを言って、全員がそれをバンド名に使ったらいいんじゃない？ってなったの。
どのようなバンドや音楽から影響を受けていますか？
パンクロックやメロディックパンクバンドに影響を受けていて、それはオールドスクールなものも新しいバンドも両方だと言えるかな。いくつか名前を挙げるとすれば、A Wilhelm Scream, Such Gold, The Story So Far, Lifetimeなんかに熱中しているわ。
４月に” Losing Years”というEPをリリースされましたよね。すべての曲がエネルギーに満ち溢れていてインパクトの大きいカッコイイEPだと思います。EPのテーマはどのようなものになっていますか？
私たちは今全員が２０代半ばなんだけど、EPに収録している曲は、その成長ステージについて歌っていたり、自分の居場所を探すことについて、自分の時間を意味のあるものにすることについて歌っているわ。
多くの時間を無駄にしていて、それでも人生においてどこにも向かっていないように、もしくは、自分がなりたい自分になれていないと感じることが時々あって。たぶん、自分と同世代の多くの人がそんなことを考えているんじゃないかな。
多くのヨーロッパのメロディックパンクバンドは、A Wilhelm ScreamやBelvedere、 Strung Outといったオールドスクールから影響を受けているような気がしますが、あなた達はHeartsoundsやCrucial Dudes、Such Goldといった最近のメロディックパンクバンドからも影響を受けていますよね。現在のシーンにおける音楽やバンドの情報をどのように得ていますか？
新しい音楽を見つけるための最も重要な情報源は、まさしくインターネットやそれを用いたFacebookやYouTubeなんかのプラットフォームよね。本当にクールなことだと思うわ。だってインターネットがなかったら知ることができなかったようなバンドも含めて、世界中のバンドを知ることができるんだもの。そして、そうしたプラットフォームは、自分たちがバンドとして活動していく上でもとても重要なものになっているのよね。残念ながら、自分たちが本当に好きなバンドの多くは、なかなかオーストリアをツアーしてくれないのよね。オーストリアにはそんなに大きなメロディックパンクのシーンは存在しないからね。
続いて、あなたのホームタウンについて教えてください。ザルツブルグを含めたオーストリアのパンクロックシーンはどういった感じですか？よく一緒にライブを行う、オーストリアのカッコいいバンドも教えてください。
ザルツブルグはオーストリアの中でも大きな都市のうちの一つだし、とってもいい場所なんだけど、そこに住んでるのはギタリストのトムだけなの。私はそこから１時間ぐらい離れたリンツというところに住んでいるし、ドラムのJojoはドイツのバイエルン州(そこでもよくスタジオに入って練習するんだけど)に住んでいるわ。ザルツブルグでは定期的にライブが行われてるんだけど、パンクロックのライブを行うのに一番適したオーストリアの都市は、おそらくウィーンね。私は、オーストリアではパンクロックはそこまでポピュラーな音楽じゃないと思うんだけど、Blind of 69っていうバンドは絶対にチェックすべきね。残念ながら彼らは解散しちゃったんだけど。あと、First Class Ticketや3 Feet Smallerもチェックしてみて。
リリースやツアーの予定など、バンドの今後について教えてください。
メンバーの入れ替わりもあって、ここ半年はライブもできていなかったんだけど、ようやく新しいベース、２人目のボーカル/ギターを一緒にスタジオに入って練習を始めることができるようになって、また今年の夏ぐらいからライブ活動を再開できる予定よ。あとは、アコースティック作品も出したいと思ってるし、たぶん”Losing Years”に収録している曲のミュージックビデオも取ると思うわ。楽しみにしてて。

Thank you for giving a chance for interview this time. First, please introduce yourself for us.
Hi, I’m Tanja and I sing in Damn Mondays, a melodic punk band from Salzburg, Austria.
What is the origin of your band name, “Damn Mondays”?
Well basically, nobody likes Mondays, I guess. Weekends are always too short. And then there comes Monday, like a slap in the face, reminding you that your life sucks.
One day we rehearsed on a Sunday evening, and we were complaining about having to go back to work and Uni the next day. It was Tom, who then said something like ‘I hate damn Mondays’ and we thought, why not use this as band name.
From what bands and what kind of music you guys are influenced?
I’d say our influences are drawn from older and newer punkrock and melodic punk bands. We’re into bands such as A Wilhelm Scream, Such Gold, The Story So Far or Lifetime just to name a few.
In April, you released a cool EP called“Losing Years”. All songs are very energetic and high-impact. What is the theme of this EP?
We’re all in our mid-twenties now, and the songs on this EP are about this stage of growing up, about finding a place where you belong and making your time worthwhile. I sometimes feel like I’ve wasted so much time and that I’m going nowhere in life, or that I haven’t become what I thought I’d be. I think a lot of people my age feel that way sometimes.
I think many Europe melodic punk bands are influenced from old school melodic punk bands like A Wilhelm Scream, Belvedere, Strung Out, but you guys are also influenced from modern melodic punk like Heartsounds, Crucial Dudes, Such Gold. How can you get the information about new band and music in current scene?
The most important source to find new music for us is definitely the internet and platforms such as Facebook and Youtube. It’s pretty cool, that you can check out bands from all over the globe, you would have never even heard of if it wasn’t for the internet. These platforms are also very important for us as a band and for promoting our music. Unfortunately, a lot of the bands we really like, hardly ever tour Austria because there’s not a very huge scene for melodic punk here.
Tell me about your hometown. What’s like punk rock scene in Salzburg and Austria. And, please let me know cool bands in Austria you often play shows with.
Salzburg is one of the larger cities in Austria, and is quite a nice place, though only Tom, our guitarist, really lives in Salzburg. I live an hour away in Linz and Jojo our drummer, lives in Bavaria, Germany, which is also where we rehearse. There are regularly shows in Salzburg, but Vienna is probably the best place in Austria for punk rock shows. I feel like punkrock’s not very popular here in Austria but you should definitely check out Blind of 69, though they broke up unfortunately, First Class Ticket or 3 Feet Smaller.
What is your future plan? Please let me know about your upcoming release, tour, and something like that.
We went through some line up changes and couldn’t play shows during the last 6 months but we just started rehearsing with a new bassist, second vocalist and guitarist and we plan to start playing live again in the summer. Also, we’re planning to do some acoustic stuff and maybe shoot a video to a song off our new EP Losing Years. We’ll see.
