今回はArmatage Shanksにインタビューに応じてもらいました。Armatage Shanksは、ノルウェー出身のメロディックパンクバンド。90年代のメロディックパンクに影響を受けた、キャッチーでポップながら骨太なサウンドが魅力のバンドです。昨年、NOFX,やRise Against, No Use For A Nameなどを手掛けるJason Livermoreの手によってマスタリングされたフルアルバム” Lost and Broken”をリリース。メロディックパンクというジャンルに分類されるバンドが少ないノルウェー国内シーンを、盛り上げていく存在になることが期待されるバンドです。

Armatage Shanksはどんなバンドですか？
- えっと、ノルウェーのPop / Skate Punkバンドだよ。すごくイケてるバンドだよ！
バンドはいつ始めましたか？
- 結成は1998年にさかのぼるね。最初はGreen Dayのカバーバンドだったんだ。2003年から2004年の間にGudmundが、2008年にAlexがそれぞれ加入して、今の体制になったんだ。
どんなバンドに影響されてバンドを始めましたか？
- 最初はまさしくGreen Dayに影響を受けてたんだけど、他にもNOFXやRancid、Blink 182、Millecolinなど多くのバンドに影響を受けたよ。
去年、”Lost and Broken”というフルアルバムをリリースしました。反響はどうでしたか？
- ノルウェーのポップパンクシーンにおいて、素晴らしい反応をもらったよ。いい評価のレビューもいくつか書いてもらったし、ラジオ局に曲をかけてもらったりもしたしね。今は、アルバムを引っさげたツアーを計画しているところなんだ。
レコーディングはどうでしたか？何か思い出深いことがあれば教えてください。
- 僕たちは、Hamarというとこにある”Grisebingen”っていうスタジオで、自分たちでレコーディングを行ったんだ。そのスタジオは、Dunderbeist（ノルウェーのヘビーメタルバンド）のFredrik Rybergがやっているんだよ。レコーディングのプロセスはとてもよくて、4人の汗臭い男たちが自分たちが本当に愛することをやりきったっていう感じだったな。Fredrikがミックスをうまくやってくれて、それを海を越えてBlasting Room StudiosのJason Livermoreに送ってマスタリングしてもらったんだ。彼は過去に、NOFXやRise Againstの作品を手掛けた人なんだよ。
フルアルバムのリリースショウやツアーは行いましたか？そのライブはどうでしたか？
- リリースショウは、自分たちのホームタウンHamarにある、”Sebs Hotel”っていう地下のVenueで、レコードをリリースした次の日にやったんだ。お客さんの反応が良くて、すごく楽しいショウだったよ。ほかにもいくつかショウはやったんだけど、現在はこの夏にツアーを行おうと計画してるんだ。
ノルウェーの現在のメロディックパンクシーンについて教えてください。また、他にカッコイイバンドがいたら教えてほしいです。
- 実のところ、ノルウェーにはあんまりPop PunkやSkate Punkをやるバンドはいないんだ。多くの人が、Green DayだったりRise Against、Bad Religionといったバンドを聞いたりするのに、ノルウェーのバンドとなるとあまり関心を示さなくなる、これって変だよね。でも、自分たちはそんなことに屈しない。だって、自分たちの音楽は彼らと同じくらい素晴らしいと思うし、時には上回るとも思ってるからね。
日本のパンクロックシーンについて(たとえばバンドなど)何か知っていますか？また、日本という国についてはどのような印象を持っていますか？
- 申し訳ないんだけど、日本のパンクバンドはひとつも知らないんだ。でも知りたいと思うよ。日本のローカルバンドにサポートしてもらって日本をツアーするのは最高だろうなぁ。ツアーを組んでくれたりしない？(笑)

Please let me know what kind of band Armatage Shanks is.
– Well, Armatage Shanks is a pop/skate-punk band from Norway. And a damned good one!
When did you start Armatage Shanks?
– It started way back in 98` as a Green Day cover band. Gudmund joined the band somewhere around 2003/2004 and when Alex joined in 2008 the band was finally complete.
What bands affect you when you start the band?
– Obviously Green Day in the beginning, but we are also influenced by bands such as NOFX, Rancid, Blink 182, Millencolin, Offspring etc.
Last year, you released the full-length called “Lost and Broken”. How was the response for that album?
– The response in the poppunkscene in Norway (for what that’s worth) was great. We got some fine reviews and radioplays, and now we`re looking forward to tour with the album.
How about the recording? Please let me know memorable things while recording.
– We recorded the album ourselves in a studio in Hamar (NO) called “Grisebingen” owned by Fredrik Ryberg from Dunderbeist. The recording process was really good, four sweaty men doing what they love the most. Fredrik did the amazing mixing, and for mastering we shipped it overseas to Jason Livermore (Blasting Room Studios) who previously worked with NOFX, Rise Against and many more.
Have you had release show or release tour? If you had, please let me know how that was.
– We did a releasegig in our hometown Hamar the day after the record got out, in a basement called “Sebs Hotel”. The response was great and we had a killer time. We did some other shows too, but were planning a bigger tour in the summer.
Please let me know the present situation of melodic punk and pop punk scene in Norway. And I want to know other melodic punk bands in Norway.
– There aren’t many bands playing pop/skate punk in Norway. Not many good ones at least. It`s a weird thing, because a lot of people listens to bands like Green Day, Rise Against, Bad Religion etc, but they just don’t bother when the band`s from Norway. We don’t get it, because our music is just as good, sometimes better.
Do you know something about punk rock scene in Japan? (Japanese bands, for example) And what impression do you have about Japan? (culture, people, etc.)
– Actually we don’t know about any Japanese punk bands, but we would like to! A tour in Japan with some local acts as support would be awesome to do! You fix eh?
